Trump and Vance Berate Zelensky in Oval Office, Cancel Minerals Deal, Eject Wartime Ally From the White House

“Have You Said Thank You Once This Entire Meeting?”

The Ukrainian president had come to Washington on February 28, 2025, to sign a bilateral agreement giving the United States preferential access to Ukraine’s rare-earth and critical-mineral deposits — a deal Trump’s own team had spent weeks negotiating and had touted as the financial scaffolding for any future peace settlement with Russia. Volodymyr Zelensky arrived at the White House in his standard wartime fatigues. The cameras were on. The signing ceremony was scheduled for that afternoon.

Inside the Oval Office, Vice President JD Vance opened by lecturing Zelensky that diplomacy with Vladimir Putin was the only viable path to peace. When Zelensky pushed back — pointing out that Putin had violated every prior ceasefire agreement with Ukraine going back to 2014 — Vance interrupted: “Have you said thank you once this entire meeting?” He repeated the question. He called it “disrespectful” for the Ukrainian president to “litigate” his country’s case “in front of the American media.”

Trump, watching from his chair, joined in. “You’re not in a good position,” he told Zelensky. “You don’t have the cards right now.” When Zelensky tried to describe what Russian occupation looked like for Ukrainian civilians, the president raised his voice: “You’re gambling with World War III.” Trump called him “disrespectful.” He told him he was not winning the war he was fighting.

The press pool stood watching for nearly forty minutes as the leader of a country invaded by Russia was berated, in front of the cameras, by the President and Vice President of the United States.

A Wartime Ally, Marched Out of the West Wing

When the Oval Office portion finally ended, the Ukrainian delegation was moved to a separate room to wait. The signing ceremony was still, technically, on the schedule. Lunch had been planned. According to Axios’s reconstruction of the day, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz then walked over to the side room and told Zelensky to leave the building.

There was no signing. There was no joint press conference. There was no lunch. The president of a country at war with a nuclear-armed neighbor was sent back to his motorcade. Trump issued a terse Truth Social statement saying Zelensky could come back “when he is ready for Peace.”

Within hours, Zelensky was on his way to London, where the British Prime Minister and the King of England received him with an embrace at the door of 10 Downing Street and a state-level reception at Sandringham. The visual contrast was immediate, and intentional, and seen all over the world.

What Was Actually Being Demanded

Trump and Vance repeatedly framed the meeting around “gratitude” and the danger of escalation. The substance underneath the theater was simpler. The administration was pressuring Ukraine to accept a peace framework that aligned, in nearly every particular, with Russia’s demands: territorial concessions, neutrality, no NATO accession, no security guarantees from the United States. Vance’s complaint that Zelensky was “litigating” his case “in front of the American media” was not a complaint about manners. It was a complaint that Zelensky was publicly resisting the deal Trump wanted to impose.

The “thank you” demand was the same maneuver Trump has run on every aid recipient and every ally for a decade: aid as personal favor, gratitude as tribute, criticism as betrayal. In 2019 it was a phone call to Zelensky asking for a “favor” on Hunter Biden in exchange for already-appropriated military assistance — the conduct that produced his first impeachment. In 2025 it was a televised dressing-down of the same head of state, this time for refusing to ratify, on camera, a peace plan that would reward the country that invaded his.

The Russian Frame, in American Marble

Trump has spent the entire Russia-Ukraine war repeating Kremlin talking points: that Ukraine “started” the war, that Zelensky is a “dictator without elections,” that NATO expansion “provoked” Putin, that the United States has been a sucker for sending aid. Each of those claims is contradicted by basic facts of the conflict and by U.S. intelligence. None of them disappeared after Trump took the oath of office. The Oval Office meeting was the moment those claims became, visibly, U.S. policy. Trump and Vance were not staging a private negotiation that went sideways. They were performing, on the world’s most watched stage, the realignment of American foreign policy onto Russia’s side of the war.

The Pattern

This is what authoritarian foreign policy looks like in practice. An ally is humiliated in public to demonstrate that loyalty to the United States now means loyalty to the President personally. Diplomats and military officers — Rubio and Waltz, both supposedly the “adults” of the second administration — are put in the position of marching a wartime president out of the building. The press is invited to film it because the humiliation is the point. And the country that benefits, as it benefited from Helsinki in 2018 and from the 2019 Ukraine extortion call, is Russia.

The minerals deal, eventually, was renegotiated and signed in a quieter format. The damage to the U.S.–Ukraine relationship, and to the entire Atlantic alliance’s confidence in American word, was not.
